How it works

A chart in, a performance out, and every step of it is something you can change.

Where it sits

A song starts as an idea and ends, sometimes, as a record. In between there is a DAW, a producer, an engineer and a lot of learning how software works. jamwi is the step before all of that: the one where the idea becomes something you can hear, play along to and hand to somebody else.

So it is not a DAW and it is not trying to be one. No mixer, no plugins, no audio tracks, nothing that comes out ready to release. What it gives you is a band playing your chart, a MIDI file of what it played, and a sheet you can put on a stand. That is where a DAW starts rather than where it ends.

There is also nothing to learn first, which is the point of it. You write chords, because that is what you would write on paper, and the band reads them.

The chart

A song is sections, a section is bars, and a bar holds one chord or several. Split a bar and the chords share it; the divisions offered are the ones the meter allows, so a 12/8 bar divides in three and four rather than in five.

The band

A style is a set of written patterns: a kit part and a bass part per section. What you set is how busy the part is, how hard it is played, how often it fills, which bass is playing and how loud each player is here. The same chart in a different style is a different record of the same song.

The pulse

The tempo is the pulse you feel, not the note the meter is written in. In 12/8 that is four to the bar at 70, which is what a drummer counts and what the metronome clicks. The exported MIDI carries the tempo the file format expects, which is a different number for the same music.

What you take away

MIDI, with the drums and the bass on separate tracks and the tempo and time signature written in, so it opens in a DAW as the band you heard. Or paper: a lead sheet with the chords over the bars, printed from the browser.

Where your songs are

In this browser. There is no server to hold them, no account to make and nothing uploaded. The whole app runs on your machine. Exporting is how a song leaves it, and that is on purpose.
